Computer Literacy Course

For Olivia's 9th grade computer literacy course, I knew that I wanted her to learn how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, iPhoto, and HTML coding. I purchased 3 Lifepac computer literacy courses from Alpha Omega (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point), but after Olivia worked with the first one for about 7 or 8 days, we knew that it wasn't the type course we were looking for. I wanted her to learn practical, useful skills---not just memorize the functions of various "clicks", and then spend most of her time filling in answers in a workbook. So we shelved the Lifepacs, and I went to Barnes and Noble in search of computer instruction books. This is what I have bought so far.

This book is also available at Amazon.com.

When Olivia completes the HTML book, she will begin the iPhoto book. I am going to let her use our personal photos that we store in iPhoto for this course.

This book is available at Amazon.com too.

After Olivia finishes this book, I plan to visit Barnes and Noble again. This time I will search for instruction manuals for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.

At first I went through the HTML book and tried to mark for her where to begin and end each day. But I wasn't sure how much time it would take for her to understand the concepts, so I was really wasting my time doing this. Now Olivia just works for about 30 minutes each day, stopping at a natural point in the book.

I cannot wait for her to learn how to design cute blog templates!

  3. Roan,
Thanks for the response the other day.

I went to Barnes and Noble, and asked about the HTML book. The man told me that a new edition will come out next month, so I think I am going to hold off until then. Christian is really excited about getting into it! I'm glad to know that it is more applicable than some others. With so many to choose from, it would have been a shot in the dark trying to find one that would be a hit! :)

  5. Hey, Roan! I just had a few minutes to catch up you guys! I hope your headaches are much better. Bless your heart. M.C. struggles with migraines, and they come in clusters. Now that she's older, hormonal changes seem to be a trigger. Just a thought.
Best wishes to Olivia with her computer skills. Logan loves that kind of thing. If she ever has a question, tell her to feel free to call, text, e-mail - whatever it is kids do now days. I can never seem to figure it out! ha!
Thank you for spreading joy!!! I am always encouraged when I visit here!! Many blessings!!!
