Filing Cabinet Makeover

Visit Org Junkie for this month's challenge

January's challenge was to clean out and organize your files. I actually did not start the process until yesterday, but in about 4 hours I got it all done! I have 6 really nice legal sized filing drawers in my schoolroom.

Since we moved into our house 4 years ago, the drawers have looked the same inside. Drawer # 1-3 had alphabetized files from the filing drawers from our old house (I didn't clean them out, just moved them).

Drawer #4 contained a small file box with all the files associated with building our house. Drawer #5 contained my school files which I actually cleaned out and organized 2 years ago, and drawer #6 has been the catch-all for everything that has needed filing for the last 4 years!

To begin this cleaning out and organizing process, I first went through each of the existing files and purged! Then I lined up the tabs in row, alphabetically.....farthest to the left are the A tabs; one space over are the B tabs; 2 spaces over are the C tabs....etc.
Lastly, I went through every single piece of paper and either filed it or threw it away. This is what Drawer #6 looks like now!
Here are the two bags of trash that came out of the drawers!

  1. I have 4 file drawers in the school room and "try" to clean them out once a year. I have two with school files all alphabetized and two with piano music filed by level. I problably need to go through the school drawers soon and replace worn out folders. Some have been around for over 15 years.

  2. Looks wonderful! Right now I'm in that packing up phase of building/remodelling. I think we'll be finished in April, then I can spend May moving into the new spaces. Right now, we're actually SMALLER than when we started! Aack!
