I Want to Sew!

Doesn't that look like me?

(Well, not the hair....although I may be getting my hair cut short soon--another story--and not the actual sewing....I haven't sewn in YEARS!.....but I want this picture to look like me!)

Olivia and Julie have been sewing a lot lately, and I am inspired! I want to join them. We turned a spare room into a sewing room last fall, and they now have the greatest set-up. I cleaned out the closet in there, and I organized all of their fabric, patterns, and other sewing supplies. For Christmas, all three girls received cute fabric, patterns, thread, and trims as gifts. Since then they have created many lovely things. Olivia mostly makes craft type items, and Julie has been trying her hand at making skirts.

Which leads me to what I want to do. I want to sew my girls some cute twirly skirts! But the main obstacle is WHEN? Can I squeeze one more thing into my day? Do you sew? When? Also, if you have made twirly skirts (or any other kind of below-the-knee cute skirts), where do you get your patterns?

I am really daydreaming about all of the sewing I want to do. Hopefully I can begin by finding the right patterns. Then the next time I am in town, maybe I can buy the supplies. Maybe by then I will have figured out the time to do the actual sewing.

We'll see! Maybe I need to wait until after the marathon!

  1. I woud love to be able to sew some fun cute-sy outfits for my girls! I have never ever followed a pattern, but it does sound like oh so much fun! If you get started, I'll try to follow suit! :)

  2. I love to sew, although I haven't done it in years. Making smocked dresses was my favorite! I have plans for a sewing room if we ever finish our upstairs! Lexie has become interested in sewing too! Maybe I can carve us out a space before long!

  3. I remember when you used to sew for the girls when they were little. All the smocked dresses were beautiful!

    You can do it!

I left you an "award" on my blog!
    Have a great week!

  4. It is hard to find the time, especially when purchasing a pretty twirly skirt is not too expensive if you get lucky and Costco has just gotten in a new batch for only 17.99.

But I love the fun of sewing and picking out the pattern and matching different fabrics together. I get my patterns at Joanne's or Hancocks when they have them on sale for .99 each. I especially love McCalls & Butterick patterns as they often have one pattern with 6 different versions on it.

I try to concentrate on the older girls when I sew just because that way I know the item will be passed down and everyone will get a chance to wear it, but I still sew for them all.

I love to make at least one matching set of dresses or skirts for each year. This year I have already purchased white eyelet fabric for sundresses with 3 gathered rows for the skirts. They will have blue satin ribbon to tie around the waists. (Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes!) I plan to get their pictures taken in them and then use them for our Christmas cards! Just planning ahead!

Oh, and when do I find the time...that is the million dollar question! I try to sew 1 hour in the evening after the girls have gone to bed. But that only works if I am not tired and haven't found something else that needs my attention.

  5. How wonderful for them all to love sewing so much and to have a great space to do it in. I hope to teach my daughter some sewing over the next couple of years.
    Blessings
